Executive MBA vs MBA: Key Differences in Cost, Format and Outcomes

Updated 27 October 2026

An executive MBA and a full-time MBA usually lead to the same degree title. The real differences are who they are built for, whether you keep your job, and how the cost is paid.

Executive MBA vs MBA salary: how to think about it

You will see "EMBA graduates earn more" claims online. Be careful: EMBA students are already more senior when they start, so comparing average salaries across the two groups tells you very little about what the degree adds. A better test is your expected change in salary or role, which you can model below using your own figures. We do not publish salary averages unless they come from a school's audited employment report.

Blended MBA vs executive MBA

"Blended" describes delivery (online plus in-person); "executive" describes the audience. Some executive MBAs are blended, and some blended MBAs are aimed at earlier-career students. Compare the class profile and timetable rather than the label. See online executive MBA and online MBA.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose an EMBA if you want to grow in your current organisation or industry, cannot give up your salary, or your employer will sponsor you.
  • Choose a full-time MBA if you want to change industry, function or country and need recruiting support and an internship.
  • Consider a one-year MBA if you want a full-time experience but can only afford a year out.
