Executive MBA for Working Professionals: Options and Planning
Updated 27 October 2026
If you are working full-time, you have four realistic MBA routes: an executive MBA, a part-time (evening/weekend) MBA, an online MBA, or taking a year out for a one-year MBA. The right one depends on your seniority, your employer's support and how much you want to change.
Compare your options
| Route | Typical experience expected | Keep job? | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Executive MBA | Substantial, often managerial | Yes | Senior professionals, sponsored students |
| Part-time / weekend MBA | Moderate | Yes | Local professionals wanting a campus network |
| Online MBA | Varies widely | Yes | Flexibility, lower cost, any location |
| One-year full-time MBA | Moderate to substantial | No | Career acceleration or switch with one year out |
Planning your time
Ask each school for a realistic weekly study estimate, then add commute or travel for in-person sessions. Block exam and residential dates in your calendar before you apply, and agree with your manager how project deadlines will be handled.
Getting employer sponsorship
- Link the programme to a business problem your team has.
- Propose how you will share what you learn (projects, workshops).
- Clarify time off for residentials and exams.
- Read any clawback clause — many sponsors require repayment if you leave within a set period.
For working professionals in India
Indian professionals often compare Indian executive programmes with international online or modular EMBAs. Check whether an international online degree is recognised for your purposes (for example public-sector roles or further study) with the relevant Indian authority, and compare the total cost in rupees, including currency risk.
