Is an Online MBA Worth It? A Framework for Your Decision

Updated 27 October 2026

An online MBA is worth it when it helps you reach a specific goal at a cost — in money and time — that you can sustain. It is less likely to be worth it if you need a dramatic career switch that depends on on-campus recruiting.

When it tends to make sense

  • You want promotion or broader responsibility in your current field.
  • Your employer values or sponsors the qualification.
  • You can't stop earning or relocate.
  • You need structured business knowledge (finance, strategy, operations) for your role or your own business.

When to think twice

  • You want to switch into a sector that recruits mainly through full-time MBA programmes.
  • You need the degree for regulated or public-sector roles where online degrees may be treated differently.
  • You can't commit the weekly study hours for the full duration.

Do the maths with your numbers

With an online MBA your income forgone is usually zero, so set "months without salary" to 0 below.
